NSE & BSE trading holidays explained

On the dates listed above the NSE and BSE cash and equity-derivatives segments are closed. On most holidays the special Muhurat trading session around Diwali is the only exception, when markets open briefly in the evening. Settlement holidays (when trading is open but clearing is closed) are separate from full trading holidays.

Does Gift Nifty trade on Indian market holidays?

Gift Nifty trades on NSE IFSC in GIFT City and observes the NSE IFSC holiday calendar, not the domestic NSE/BSE calendar. This means Gift Nifty can be open on some days when Indian cash markets are shut, and vice-versa. Because Gift Nifty runs almost 21 hours across two sessions, always confirm the specific contract’s holiday schedule with NSE IFSC or your broker before trading around a holiday.

How to use the holiday calendar

  • Plan expiries — check whether a holiday falls on or near a weekly/monthly expiry, which can shift the expiry date.
  • Manage positions — long weekends raise overnight and gap risk; the Gift Nifty implied open is especially useful after a holiday.
  • Track settlement — funds and pay-in/pay-out timelines move with settlement holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the stock market open today in India?
The live banner at the top of this page shows the current NSE/BSE status — open, closed or on holiday — along with the next upcoming trading holiday and a countdown. NSE and BSE cash markets trade Monday to Friday, 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST, except on the listed holidays.
Does Gift Nifty follow NSE holidays?
No. Gift Nifty trades on NSE IFSC and follows the NSE IFSC holiday calendar, which can differ from the domestic NSE/BSE calendar. On some Indian holidays Gift Nifty may still trade, so always check the NSE IFSC schedule.
How many trading holidays does NSE have in 2026?
The number of NSE/BSE equity trading holidays in 2026 is shown in the table above, which lists every date, day and occasion. Weekends (Saturday and Sunday) are additional non-trading days beyond these public holidays.
What is Muhurat trading?
Muhurat trading is a special one-hour ceremonial session held on Diwali to mark the start of the Hindu new Samvat year. It is the main exception to the holiday closure and is considered auspicious by many investors.
