How we calculate the implied Nifty 50 open
The implied open is approximated by the live Gift Nifty price — because Gift Nifty trades nearly 21 hours, its level reflects where the Nifty 50 is likely to open.
The implied gap is calculated as:
Gap = Gift Nifty price − Nifty 50 previous close
Gap % = Gap ÷ Nifty 50 previous close × 100
We label the signal using these indicative bands (an editorial convention, not an exchange definition):
- Flat — gap within ±50 points
- Gap-Up / Gap-Down — gap beyond ±50 points
- Wide — beyond ±150 points; Strong — beyond ±200 points
The premium/discount (Gift Nifty minus the live Nifty 50 spot) is only shown while the NSE cash market is open, since spot is frozen outside those hours.
Important caveats
- Gift Nifty is a futures contract and carries a small cost-of-carry premium over spot, so a near-flat gap can still read as a slight premium.
- The signal is directionally reliable most of the time but the actual NSE open can differ by 15–40 points due to domestic order flow at the opening auction.
